3. HAZARD IDENTIFICATION
APPEARANCE AND ODOR: Light to dark colored crushed plant fibers of mixed mesh range having moisture content of 15-20%. Grassy/earthy odor.
PRIMARY HAZARD EFFECTS: The primary health hazard posed by this material is thought to be due to inhaling dust. Inhalation of any dust causes coughing, gagging and breathing difficulties, and may aggravate asthma. All wood/plant dusts have been implicated in causing skin irritation either by dermal abrasion or by exposure to unspecified chemicals in the wood. Product is generally harmless if accidentally ingested in small quantities.
PRIMARY ROUTES OF EXPOSURE: Dust – skin contact and inhalation.
TOXICITY DATA:
- Oral - N/A
- Dermal – Wood/plant dust is an eye, skin and mucus membrane irritant and may cause skin and pulmonary sensitization. The chronic effects of skin contact are not known.
- Carcinogenicity Listing - IRAC Monographs; wood dust, Group 1
- Other Pertinent Data - N/A
HAZARD RATING (0-least, 1-slight, 2-moderate, 3-high, 4-extreme)
- Health – 0
- Fire – 1
- Reactivity – 0
4. EMERGENCY FIRST AID PROCEDURES
INGESTION: Not applicable under normal use.
EYE CONTACT: Treat dust in eye as foreign object. Flush with plenty of water for at least 15 minutes, and seek medical attention if irritation persists.
SKIN CONTACT: Not needed under normal conditions. Seek medical attention if irritation occurs and persists.
INHALATION Remove to fresh air. Seek medical attention if irritation or breathing difficulties occur.
5. SPECIAL PROTECTION INFORMATION
PERSONAL PROTECTION EQUIPMENT;
- Gloves - Recommended for sensitive individuals.
- Eye Protection - Safety glasses or goggles.
- Respiratory Protection - Mask or approved dust respirator in dusty conditions. If the exposure limit is exceeded and engineering controls are not feasible, wear a NIOSH/MSHA approved air-purifying respirator appropriate to the contamination levels.
- Other Protective Equipment- Use of outer-body work clothing recommended to reduce dermal exposure
VENTILATION:
Provide general dilution ventilation or local exhaust ventilation.
SPECIAL - EXERCISE CAUTION AND WEAR PROTECTIVE DEVICES APPROPRIATE OR RECOMMENDED FOR ANY MATERIAL(S) BEING ABSORBED BY THIS PRODUCT
6. SPILL AND DISPOSAL PROCEDURES
RELEASED OR SPILLED UNUSED OILMASTER:
- Sweep or shovel unused product for recovery or disposal, avoiding excessive dust.
- Store in original or similar container.
- Dispose of in landfill or incinerate.
DEPLOYED OR SPILLED USED MATERIALS:
Scoop or sweep contaminated material into covered metal container or other safe vessel, avoiding all contact as it may have adsorbed unspecified contaminates. Avoid all ignition sources, as spilled flammable liquids are still flammable after being absorbed. Store contaminated product in safe, well-ventilated area pending proper disposal. Dispose of in accordance with local regulations, established protocols or handle as hazardous waste and send to a RCRA approved incinerator or dispose in a RCRA approved waste facility.
